Gifts From the Heart
Help girls continue their education instead of becoming a child bride!
All girls deserve a full and happy life with an education.
Girls in rural Kenya, an area plagued with abject poverty and drought, often are made child brides in exchange for a dowry of livestock. An illegal and dangerous procedure called FGM is a traditional rite of passage for child brides. Girls who refuse forced marriage and the painful procedure find sanctuary in the Pokot Kenyan Methodist Church where they are safe to continue their schooling.

The Kenyan Methodist Women are now working to build a shelter to give these girls a safe place to call home where they can go to school in a supportive community. The sustainable shelter is being built now on 40 acres of the church grounds with 44 beds, a kitchen, clinic, library, chapel and security fence.

FGM is Female Genital Mutilation - the practice, traditional in some cultures, of partially or totally removing the external genitalia of girls and young women for nonmedical reasons. It is illegal in many countries, including Kenya. Most often, FGM is practiced on girls and young women under 18. FGM is not prescribed by any religion and has no health benefits. On the contrary the practice can cause life-lasting physical and psychological trauma.
